IRS Tax Scam
1/22/2015
Dear Clients:
IRS Phone scams continue to be a problem. I wanted to forward you an IRS Newswire below that reviews how best to identify this phone scams.
In general, if anyone calls and demands over the phone, a money order to resolve an issue, this is likely a phone scam, no matter what it is. And this is not just limited to IRS scams, but to scams to bail out other family members, who supposedly got in an accident or are in a foreign country, etc. Unfortunately, too many friends and clients have been subjected to these types of scams, so it is worth reviewing.
If you do not read the IRS Newswire below, please at least read the following:
The IRS will never:
- Call to demand immediate payment, nor will the agency call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill.
- Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe.
- Require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card.
- Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.
- Threaten to bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying.
Let me know if you have any questions.
